Turning Point is nationally recognized as the leader in extended care and sober living for young men. Located in New Haven Connecticut, we were founded on the principle that young men who have recently completed primary treatment for substance abuse need structure, guidance, peer support, clinical services, and opportunities for recreational and social activities while they navigate early sobriety and prepare to re-enter the world.
Over our ten year history, we’ve developed an innovative three-phased step-down approach to recovery that gradually reintegrates young men as they develop the skills, confidence, and maturity that will prepare them for a successful transition.
We’ve earned a national reputation for our post-primary work with young males, and routinely see repeat referrals from many of the country’s premiere primary drug treatment programs.
Designed in response to numerous studies demonstrating conclusively that the longer an individual is engaged in “treatment”, the better the outcome; the Turning Point extended care and sober living program bridges the gap between primary inpatient drug treatment and independent living.
Our unique “Phased Reintegration” model (Phase I, II & III) is a recovery building block approach, where each phase is designed to build upon the previous one. It exposes young men to a drug-free world gradually, as their coping skills, self esteem, and recovery tools become sufficient to identify and navigate potential threats to sobriety.
Progression through the phases is accomplished according to readiness, as determined by the resident, his family and Turning Point team. It is a highly individualized process since each young man’s recovery progresses at its own rate.
Residents transition to independent living only after they have enrolled in college, are working part-time and/or volunteering, maturely managing relationships, preparing and eating three healthy meals a day, attending to their physical and emotional health, have a 12–step sponsor and are actively working the steps and demonstrated that they can independently sustain these behaviors over a period of time.
In short, our extended care and sober living program builds on the gains made in inpatient drug treatment by exposing young men to a healthy, balanced lifestyle, a strong peer support group, and guidance from those who have walked a similar path.
