Extended Care and Sober Living for Young Men

Turning Point Extended Care & Sober Living is a nationally recognized drug treatment aftercare program located in New Haven Connecticut for young men who have completed inpatient treatment for alcohol or drug dependency. Set in comfortable, home-like sober living environments (each with a distinct level of care), our comprehensive treatment aftercare program is designed to gradually expose young men to the challenges of early sobriety and support them as they develop the maturity, coping skills and leadership qualities that will prepare them for independent living.

Within the framework of a structured, yet supportive environment, residents are provided with the time, tools and support to continue healing while learning to live life without alcohol and drugs. We focus on integrity in all aspects of living…and the importance of willingness and courage as they journey along the road to recovery.

To achieve this, we build on the gains made in inpatient drug treatment while simultaneously teaching life and leadership skills. We use a combination of 12-Step philosophy, employment and volunteer opportunities, recreational activities, spiritual awareness, music, integrated therapeutic clinical services, nutritional and physical education, and academic development

Rebuilding lives through PHASED REINTEGRATION

Our extended care and sober living program bridges the gap between primary inpatient drug treatment and independent living. It is designed in response to numerous studies demonstrating conclusively that the longer an individual is engaged in “treatment”, the better the outcome.

The Phase System (Phases I, II, III) is our approach to the continuation of treatment. It is a recovery building block approach, where each phase is designed to build upon the previous one. This exposes the resident to a drug-free world gradually, as their coping skills, self esteem, and recovery tools become sufficient to identify and navigate potential threats to their recovery.

Progression through the phases is accomplished according to readiness, as determined by the resident, his family and his Turning Point team. It is a highly individualized process since each person’s recovery progresses at its own rate.

How do we measure success?

Residents do not transition to out lowest level of care, Phase III Sober Living, until they are going to sleep and waking up on their own, preparing and eating three healthy meals a day, attending to their physical and emotional health, have a 12–step sponsor and are actively working the steps, are employed or volunteering, enrolled in college, maturely managing relationships, and demonstrating that they can independently sustain these behaviors over a period of time.

Our mission is a difficult one: we take young men who have been unable to manage their lives and teach them responsibility through guidance and accountability.

In short, our extended care and sober living program builds on the gains made in inpatient drug treatment by exposing young men to a healthy, balanced lifestyle, a strong peer support group, and guidance from those who have walked a similar path.
