Many residents at Turning Point have had their high school or college education interrupted as a result of their addictions and subsequent treatment(s). And, in most cases, they need support and guidance developing an academic path that fits in with their new recovery lifestyle.
At Turning Point, we provide residents with services that support their educational and academic goals and offer the expertise and resources they need to get into and graduate from high school, community colleges, public and private universities, vocational schools, and graduate schools.
Our academic advisor, Michael Grappone, offers experience and a thorough understanding of the academic and admissions fields in order to help each resident achieve his educational goals while continuing to work on his recovery. Michael earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics and a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education at Fairfield University in Fairfield Connecticut.
During Phase I, individualized educational assessments focusing on educational histories and future goals are completed for each resident. For those who have not yet completed high school, Michael will work in conjunction with high schools or other distance learning programs to create and proctor personalized educational plans. U
pon completion of these curriculums, residents will receive their high school diplomas.
For residents who have completed high school but have not yet attended college or who have received some college credits, Michael will help them earn associates degrees, bachelors degrees or professional certificates. In order to do this, he present residents with the local colleges and universities that they can attend as part-time students and then help them with each step of the application process including, but not limited to, assistance with filling out applications, writing college application essays, and sending official high school and college transcripts.
Once residents are accepted to one or more colleges/universities, Michael continues to work with them to set up advisement meetings, registration dates, and placement tests. He also offer academic tutoring in most subject areas.
